Match report: Gorleston 2-0 Cambridge City

Cambridge City took on Gorleston on a breezy and bright Saturday afternoon. The Liliywhites had come off the back of an impressive 5-0 victory on Tuesday night against Witham Town under the lights. Gorleston had also been in action on Tuesday night, beating Wroxham 2-0 in front of 361 spectators.

City had a new arrival in the squad. The addition of Rohat Matyar on loan from Barnet had raised eyebrows, especially as he was in the Maldon & Tiptree team that won the Isthmian League North Division last season.

It took seven minutes for the first opportunity to arise. A Ryan Fryatt shot was cleared off the line after Antoni Bort had managed to punch away an earlier cross. City's top scorer Charlie Royle then aimed at the open goal, but the striker couldn't add to his six goals as his effort clipped the top of the bar.

City had another effort after 15 minutes. Jack Thompson received the ball from Royle and the former saw his shot blocked by Zach Dronfield en route to goal. Then, just two minutes later, Reece Harris wandered through the midfield to find Fletcher Toll. Thompson then latched onto the pass from Toll, but Thompson's shot flew wide of the post.

Four minutes later came the best piece of play from the visitors so far. A long throw from Charlie Norman eventually allowed Alex Warman to send a ball forward and Toll did brilliantly to chest the ball towards Fryatt, but his shot missed the target. Toll then had a shot saved by Bort after 26 minutes, this coming after Warman had seen his shot cleared off the line.

With 29 minutes gone, the match changed. Reece Harris saw red for handling the ball on the goal-line, with referee Dario Matthewson reducing City to ten men and awarding Gorleston a penalty. Captain Harvey Black took the spot kick but stand-in goalkeeper Gene Ghag dived to his left to keep the shot out.

Right towards the end of the half, Black fired a free-kick up towards the City defence, and Travis Sol Cole missed a golden opportunity at the far post to give the hosts the lead. The scores remained 0-0 at half-time.

The second half was uneventful for the first ten minutes. The 55^th minute saw Jaiden Babalola beat his opposite number in the form of Kyle Haylock, and then he went for goal but his effort flew harmlessly over the bar. Two minutes later, though, and Gorleston hit the front. A throw was taken long by Lewis Johnson and Luke Johnson managed to bundle home at the far post to give the hosts the lead.

Black then latched onto a long ball and preceded to lob Ghag, having seen the goalkeeper off his line. Black's chance was gone as the ball travelled wide. Norman then managed to send in a cross after holding onto the ball under some severe pressure. Warman connected with the ball but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

The next few minutes didn't yield many chances, although Spencer Keller saw his cross blocked in front of the line after he latched onto an accurate long ball. With nine minutes left to play, Keller found himself on the left wing with an option to cross. His cross was met by Aaron Bullent, who nodded back across goal to double his side's lead. Haylock continued to cause problems for the Lilywhites, and he found himself bearing down on goal with only Ghag to beat. Haylock then decided to lob the keeper, but his shot struck the outside of the near post.

City kept pushing for a consolation which never came and Gorleston held on to comfortably win 2-0. City will next be in action on Saturday when they take on Alvechurch of the Southern League Premier Division Central in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, with City only two wins away from the First Round Proper.
