City & Wroxham share the spoils

Cambridge City headed to the Norfolk Broads to face Wroxham FC on Saturday afternoon. City were heading into the match on an 11 match unbeaten run, although the last two fixtures resulted in draws, 1-1 with Stanway Rovers and 0-0 with Brightlingsea Regent. The Yachtsmen themselves had been on a 5 match unbeaten run, which was ended by a defeat to table-toppers Felixstowe & Walton United, 2-0.

A large portion of the first half didn't really amount to much for either of the two sides. Shaun Mavididi did get the better of namesake Shaun Taylor. Alfie Mason's cross, however, was comfortably dealt with.

A couple of minutes later, though, and a long ball up to George Smith was seemingly handled by Wroxham's captain Jordan King. City's supporters and players appealed for the penalty, but referee Stuart Jessop waved the shouts away.

It took 14 minutes for the first major chance. A corner for Wroxham came out, eventually, to Travis Dodsworth, with the resulting shot being deflected. The second corner that came in was first punched out by James Philp, then headed harmlessly wide by Jordan King.

Five minutes later saw City have a chance of their own. George Smith got the ball rolling for Solomon Ofori. The striker then played it back into the path of Smith, but City's forward couldn't find the finish that he wanted and sent the ball flying over.

From this point, until the end of the first half, saw fairly little in terms of action. Ofori tried to make the most of a mistake by Jordan King but his effort was blocked. This period also included a clash involving Ali Njie and James Moore, with Njie claiming Moore had trod on his foot, while Moore claimed that Njie had dragged him back by the neck. The referee awarded the free-kick is City's favour.

With 38 minutes gone, a City throw was aimed at Sam Coombes. Coombes then fed a pass to Mavididi. The striker positioned himself for the shot but his effort fell wide.

Solomon Ofori then got himself free on the left hand side and aimed his cross into the penalty area, but Jordan King cleared away the danger from under pressure.

With the half-time break approaching, a period which included Ofori trying his luck with, not one, but two overhead kicks, Ryan King trotted down to the penalty area and James Everett fouled the City man. King fell into the 18-yard box but the referee adjudged the foul to have been committed outside the area. Alfie Mason's free-kick was claimed by Tom Coombe.

The second half started well for the visitors. Alex Warman picked up the ball from the middle of the park, and was also brought down outside the area. Mason's free-kick was blocked twice on route to goal.

With 58 minutes gone City had their goal. A Coombes pass was aimed at Ofori. Initially, Charlie Norman had beaten the City forward, but Ofori's determination helped him win the ball back from Norman, and slide in a cross for Ryan King to slot home his first senior goal for the club.

3 minutes later, City could have doubled their lead. Giani Ashley had come through to send in a cross, which then came out to Warman, who skied the effort.

City's lead was not for long, however. Wroxham were awarded a free-kick midway through the City half. The cross was sent in towards the far post and James Everett was on hand to head back across goal to level the game.

City came back looking to retake the lead, with Coombes receiving a pass from the throw, the cross came into Quevin Castro but the substitute couldn't find the target.

With 75 minutes gone, a Wroxham corner very nearly lead to the second goal for the Norfolk side. Ashley cleared the original cross away, the ball then fell kindly for Travis Dodsworth. The strike came through a crowd but Philp was equal to it.

The action wasn't going to stop anytime soon. Within four minutes of Philp's save, a throw gave Coombes the option to find a cross. He did, with a handball claim loud in the referee's ears, which Stuart Jessop waved away. The resulting scramble allowed Coombe to pounce on the ball and save the day.

A minute later, and the ball came right back. Castro got through after beating his man, and the ball forward fell right in front of Ofori. The striker found the net, but the assistant's flag was raised for offside.

A couple of chances each side came and went before the referee blew for full-time. A draw matched the result from when these two teams met on 30th August, 0-0 was the result in the Summer.

City's unbeaten run continues, stretching to 12 matches, and the Lilywhites will look to make it 13, when they take on Takeley next Saturday in Sawston.
