City Par Ability Team Triumph Again

Another successful par ability football season came to an end on a very sunny cup finals day at
Histon FC at the end of April - more of that later. The City first team won the league for the seventh year in a row and we’ve certainly triumphed in the three years I’ve been involved.
For the second summer in a row, we’d lost key players to other teams and we approached the season unsure how we’d do. I needn’t have worried. We have a core of players who never miss training and always put in a huge effort on the six league tournament days (comprising 30 games over the season) which take place between September and March. We’d also recruited a few new players to plug the gaps in the squad.

The first team started with three wins v Cambridge Utd, our traditional closest rival, in the first three tournaments. With St Ives and Hampton in the league now, the standard in the league has gone up. We managed to edge quite a few games by one goal and we were top of the table throughout the season. The final margin was 11pts, with 23 wins, 5 draws and only 2 losses (one each against United and Hampton). Champions again!
Our second team was ably managed by my new assistant, Simon Tucker, and was highly competitive despite lacking numbers on occasion. The final position of 2nd place, behind a very good Histon team, saw us with a record of 19 wins, 5 draws and 6 losses. This record doesn’t really reflect the immense effort by players in this team throughout the season. Well done boys.

And so to the inaugural cup final day at Histon. We were incredibly close to a league and cup double. Second in our group, we played Hampton in the semi-finals, prevailing 2-0. A final loss of 2-1 to Histon didn’t reflect our dominance in this game, hitting the woodwork 3 times and spurning various other chances. That’s football I guess.
So a great season all in all. We also had a friendly v Hampton at Sawston before a City game afterwards and the boys all loved seeing City play (and win).
Many thanks to Simon Tucker for all his help this year - it’s invaluable to me.
Thanks also to Stuart Nunn, Sid Cullum and Pauline Muncey (our photographer) for all your support. Here’s looking forward to 2025/26 (and maybe, just maybe Palace winning the FA Cup in the meantime).
