Updated: Jun 24

We are delighted to announce a long-awaited pre-season friendly with near neighbours, Cambridge United, marking the first meeting between the two clubs in several years.

It will be almost 7 years to the day since the last meeting. The match will take place this summer on July 5th at City’s FWD-IP Community Stadium, which opened its doors in November last year.

This fixture not only rekindles a local rivalry but also celebrates the strong and longstanding ties between the two clubs. Over the years, many of United’s youth players have gained valuable experience in City colours, and that shared history will be front and centre when the two teams meet on the pitch once again.

Cambridge United approach the match following a difficult 2024–25 campaign that saw them relegated to League Two. However, with former City player Neil Harris now at the helm as United manager, there’s renewed optimism at the Abbey. Harris’s appointment has added extra meaning to the fixture, as has the presence of Mark Bonner – a Sawston native and lifelong U’s supporter – who recently stepped into the role of Director of Football.

For Cambridge City, the game represents another important step in the club’s rebuilding journey. Since moving into their new home late last year, City have been working hard to re-establish their presence both on and off the field, and this high-profile fixture is a key milestone in that process. Manager, Jamie Cureton is looking to progress this season after stabilising the team in the 24/25 season with a respectable mid table finish.

City Chairman Kevin Satchell said:

“We’re thrilled to be hosting Cambridge United this summer. It’s more than just a match – it’s a celebration of the footballing links that run deep in this city and the surrounding community. With familiar faces like Neil Harris and Mark Bonner involved, it promises to be a fantastic occasion for players and fans alike.”

Fixture details and ticket information, will be announced shortly.
