City powered to a 3-1 victory over Walthamstow Football Club in the Pitching In Isthmian League. A hard fought and thoroughly entertaining 90 mins of football at Westwood Road.
With torrential rain pouring down in the opening minutes it was City who started the quicker, George Smith rifling home a volley from 10 yards with just 2 minutes on the clock.
Both sides continued to play quick fast flowing, attacking football in the horrible conditions but it was Jack Thompson with an audacious effort that made it 2-0 on 38 mins With seemingly no threat on the Walthamstow goal , Thompson spotted keeper Lewis Greene off his line and from all of 45 yards fired a first time volley over the keepers head, an incredible piece of improvisation from the 21 year old. Surely a contender for goal of the season.
The first half ended with the rain abating and understandably the pace dropped for the second half. Both sides had opportunities but it was Smith who struck again on 74 minutes, a sharp turn and left footed shot across the keeper made it 3-0 to the Lilywhites.
Walthamstow did manage a consolation goal on 81 minutes but it was City who came closest to adding to the scoreline further. Smith denied his hat-trick by Greene who stood up and saved well when one on one, Samarai Gebrai forced a good save from the Walthamstow stopper before striking the post with another effort. The energetic Shane Temple also hit the woodwork after coming on and replacing Aaron Greene.
A fantastic advert for Isthmian league football and the best performance from this new look City team so far this season.
