Addicted to Football

Cambridge City are delighted to announce a new partnership with local support group 'Addicted to Football'

Charlie Barker, 32, started the group after overcoming his own struggles with addiction. Now sober for four years, Charlie wanted to create a space where others can find support while having fun.

“It’s simple: come for the football, stay for the chat,” he says.

Charlie explains that he felt there was a need for a supportive, non-clinical environment where people could connect.

“I went through my own battles with addiction and mental health,” he shares. “It was tough—there were moments I didn’t think I’d make it out. Something like this would’ve been a game-changer for me back then.”

The group offers free weekly sessions with just one rule: no drugs or alcohol allowed.

“This isn’t about judgement,” Charlie says. “Some people played football as kids but drifted away when life got hard. Maybe they struggled with addiction or just lost their way. This gives them a chance to reconnect, have a kick-about, and meet others going through similar challenges.”

He adds, “It’s amazing to see people benefiting. It’s not just about football—it’s about building connections and having a good time. That warm, positive vibe is what makes it all worth it.”

The group recently enjoyed a visit to the club as guests for the clash with Heybrodge Swifts and have also been raising a lot of awareness in the local press with ITV recently visiting the stadium to film an article with the team. You can see this on the ITV website now.

We will be offering use of our 3G pitch on Sunday evenings so the grop have a safe space to train, but we need some help getting them the correct footwear. If you're interested in supporting Charlie and his team, we are seeking a sponsor to supply moulded boots for the 3G pitch. If you or your company would like to assist, please contact
