Members of Cambridge City Supporters Trust are to pull on their clubs jersey and take to the Milton Road pitch on Friday 4th December to battle for the annual crown of the Supporters Cup against members of Cambridge Fans United Trust.
This event which is an annual fixture for both sets of fans and normally takes place during pre-season was thought up by Cambridge United fan Ben Phillips three years ago. Cambridge United are current holders of the trophy and normally squad places are bought for a set price amongst fans with proceeds being shared between both supporters trusts.
This year though it’s the Teenage Cancer Trust who will benefit from this annual event. The Teenage Cancer Trust doesn’t currently have any special facilities in East Anglia for teenagers suffering cancer. However an agreement has been reached recently to build a state of the art unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital, this is going to cost in excess of £2 million pounds. Every day up to 6 teenagers in the UK are diagnosed with a form of cancer.
Cancer in youngsters is different to that of children and older adults. It’s important for their psychological well being that they are treated in a specialist facility that is built to meet their needs. It is also critical for their emotional well being that they are treated in a comfortable environment where they can meet other people their own age who understand and who can share the distressing problems they are fighting with their illness.
Fans will be given the opportunity to bid for a place in the squad to represent their club in the game on Friday 4th December. The person with the highest bid will win a squad place and both supporters trusts hope this will appeal to fans of all ability. If you want a chance of playing for Cambridge United you can send a bid by email to benphillips610@hotmail.com & for a chance to be part of the Cambridge City team, send a bid by email to derek.bailham@ntlworld.com
Both supporters trusts are urging friends and fellow supporters from both clubs to come along and show their support on the evening. Kick off is at 7:30 pm and there will be no admission fee but the organisers would like people to make a donation in the buckets on entry to the ground. We hope you will join us for what promises to be an entertaining evening.
