PYE County Cup Final: Friday 30th April 2010
City Under 16s visit the Glassworld Stadium for the PYE County Cup Final to play Histon Hornets 'B'.
The pitch was in great shape and obviously lots of money has been spent on it over the past few years.
The side showed three changes to the starting line up that played Bury last Sunday with Tom Sapsford, Shaun Flack and Adam Wright in and Brett Wyman, Tayler Pooley and Richard Brandon on the bench. James Howard had recovered from injury to also take his place in the squad.
We lined up as follows :
WRIGHT, YOUNGS, GUY, SPENCER (c), SAPSFORD, FLACK, HOBSON, BROWN, NICHOLSON, DRISCOLL, DARLING. Subs: BRANDON, MARTIN, WYMAN, HOWARD, POOLEY.
The match started at a furious pace with Histon launching the ball forward with the wind at their backs. There were a couple of uneasy moments in the defence, but skipper SPENCER and keeper WRIGHT made sure everyone kept calm.
After 15 minutes we came into the game. HOBSON and BROWN in central midfield were winning most things and FLACK was causing concern to Histon down the flank. In the 24th minute we nearly had the lead. NICHOLSON found DRISCOLL who in turn sent FLACK away and he beat the keeper, but his shot was cleared off the line. From the resulting corner BROWN's header was well tipped over by the Histon keeper.
5 minutes later we did have the lead, DARLING and DRISCOLL combining to send FLACK clear and yet again he beat the keeper, however this time the defender could only turn it in to his own net for an OWN GOAL. Histon came back at us, but SAPSFORD and GUY were standing up to everything that came at them.

No changes at the break and we doubled our lead just 5 minutes in. YOUNGS who was having a fine game at full-back went on a run beating three players and was upended on the edge of the box. NICHOLSON bent the resulting free-kick round the wall through a ruck of players and into the corner.
POOLEY then replaced DARLING and two minutes later MARTIN came on for YOUNGS. We continued to press and FLACK's cross was just too far for DRISCOLL to get on the end of. WYMAN then came on for GUY. We were really dominating now and several half chances came and went. With 20 minutes to go HOWARD came on for BROWN - his first action since the beginning of March.
Histon's first chance of the half saw their centre forward muscle through, but brave keeping by WRIGHT and defending by SPENCER averted the danger. Unfortunately SPENCER was injured in the collision and had to leave the field. YOUNGS came back on and DARLING replaced the hardworking DRISCOLL.
With 10 minutes remaining BRANDON came on in goal for WRIGHT. We still had the better of the play with NICHOLSON causing more and more trouble down the left wing. We needed one more goal to kill this off but as time was running out Histon scored after a slip in the defence. With five minutes injury time could City hold out. There was no need to worry as DARLING was sent clear and he unleashed a rocket from the edge of the box that secured the win and the cup was City's.

It was not our best display this season, but sometimes it’s more about the result. Histon gave everything and made us work extremely hard for the win. The boys again did the club proud and hopefully they can shake off the tiredness for Sundays EJA cup final at Boreham Wood kick off 1pm.
I would like to thank all the City supporters tonight who came to Histon, it was appreciated.
Manager Simon Youngs said "A fantastic night played in front of 300/400 spectators. The boys play football for nights like these. We would all just like to thank City for giving them the chance”.
