There were several influential players missing from the Development Team which was possibly the reason for the rather tentative start.
The visitors came close to opening the scoring in the 4th minute when City keeper Joe Isaacson had to tip a twenty yard shot over the bar for a corner.
The city goal area was seeing much more of the play than the Cherryhinton goalmouth as City struggled to create any threats, but the City defence was holding up well and starting to gain in composure.
An opening goal from Cherryhinton looked imminent, but it was rather unfortuitous when, after 15 minutes, a shot that Joe Isaacson looked well placed to cover, took a deflection and, leaving him wrong footed, found the net to make it City 0 Cherryhinton 1.
Cherryhinton continued to press and the City goal had several narrow escapes, but City heads didn't drop as they dug in and started to create some useful attacks down the wings.
It took until the 45th minute for City to gain a corner. Jude White took the kick and goalmouth head tennis ended when Victor Garcia's head steered it into the net to give a half time score of: City Development 1 Cherryhinton 1.
The second half opened with City playing with more confidence and flair and 3 minutes into the half they had a chance to take the lead when Chris Racher on the left wing beat the defence and cut inside, only to be brought down a yard outside the box. Bobby Freil took the kick, but it curled round the wall and straight into the keeper's arms.
Ten minutes later, as City attacked again, Ricardo Green was brought down inside the box. Jude White took the resultant penalty and made it City 2 Cherryhinton 1.
The lead lasted less than a minute as, from the kickoff, a lob from the halfway line cleared the keeper and dropped under the bar to make it City 2 Cherryhinton 2.
The game started to get a little feisty, with one or two displays of petulance as Cherryhinton piled on the pressure, their efforts eventually rewarded with two quick goals, the first in the 73rd minute and the second 5 minutes later. Both goals could be attributed to lapses in concentration by the City defence.
Although tiring,City fought to get back into the game and came close in the last minute of normal time when Ricardo Green's curling shot from 25 yards hit the bar.
Final score: City Development 2 Cherryhinto 4.
