A goal in each half was enough to settle the result, but, if it wasn't for City goalkeeper Joe Isaacson, the score line could have been much greater.
Ely had the first scoring chance in the 6th minute but City's Ben Steele was there to head off the line. 5 minutes later, at the other end, Harry Farrow's shot from the edge of the box beat the diving Ely keeper and hit the post. Harry was following up well but couldn't get to the rebound before the Ely defence.
Ely were controlling most of the play and keeping it in the City half, but the City defence was holding firm.
In the 28th minute, City midfielder Ben Steele, who was having an influential game, had to be replaced due to injury, and 10 minutes later Ely took the lead with a well taken shot from 5 yards outside the box that gave the keeper no chance.
With their tails up, Ely increased the pressure and in the 44th minute they nearly got a second goal following a corner, but Matt Jenkins was at the near post to clear off the line.
Half time: Ely Reserves 1 City Development 0.
Two minutes into the second half Ely scored their second as the City defence switched off and allowed their opponents to weave their way through the midfield.
All the pressure was now coming from Ely, the Development Team's situation not being helped when, in the 66th minute, veteran defender Rob Scrutton limped off and 2 minutes later Jude White had to be carried from the pitch.
The re-organised City team now had their backs to the wall and defended valiantly, with keeper Joe Isaacson pulling off a series of acrobatic saves.
In the 73rd minute, City found themselves reduced to 10 men when Morgan Cogman-Wright was dismissed after a contentious straight red card.
City now had both starting center backs off the field, and were reduced to 10 men, but heads didn't drop, and the final 15 minutes of the game saw City upping the pace and opening the game up to create some promising attacking moves, with Ricardo Green causing the Ely defence problems when he broke down the right.
With 2 minutes to go, Tom Goodjohn was brought down just outside the penalty area. Andrea Vincis took the kick, beating the wall and pulling a spectacular flying save from the Ely keeper.
