EVO-STIK League South Div. One Central: Bedford Town 1 Cambridge City 2

A goal deep into injury time left all conected with City with huge grins on their faces as lady luck finally went the way of the Lilywhites, after a deflected goal gave City their first win since early November.

There was an early scare for City when Tremayne Charles unleashed a fierce shot low down which Jamie Head in the City goal initially fumbled, but the ball was hacked away before any damage could be done. City responded when Nathan Olukanmi found space to get an effort away, but Kyle Forster in the home goal was equal to it.

Charles then came to the fore again, but this time could only fire over the bar after being picked out by Tony Mendy.

Bedford had started with real zeal and City had to be on their mettle to keep them at bay, but as time ticked by, the Lilywhites eased themselves into the contest, although little was produced to trouble Forster.

Just past the half hour mark, City did well to survive a goalmouth scramble after Gavin Hoyte headed a deep free-kick back across goal. Their goal wasn't to stay in tact much longer though when Dan Walker escaped on the left hand side, drew Head from his line and calmly lobbed the City keeper for the opening goal.

City showed intent after the break and in the early seconds created a good chance, although Josh Oyinsan's shot lacked power to realy trouble Forster. However, it was a different story ten minutes later when City's Olukanmi raced on to a through ball before curling an excellent finish beyond the reach of Forster, levelling the game.

With a goal in the bag City began to get the upper hand and Mickey Davis forced a good save when he curled a free-kick beyond the wall. A long throw then caused mayhem in the Bedford area, before Forster managed to get control of the ball under severe pressure from Oyinsan.

City were looking good for a winning goal as the game moved into it's final moments. Oyinsan was very much the danger man as Bedford struggled to deal with him. The big striker placing a header just wide of the target then being denied what would have been a clear run on goal by a last ditch Dean Dummett tackle.

It wasn't all City though and with only minutes of normal time left, Walker got away from his marker and City had Head to thank as he rushed from his line and just managed to divert the striker's effort away with his foot.

There was still drama to come though deep into injury time. A long Keano Robinson throw saw the ball forced out for a corner. Bedford failed to clear as the ball was swung in, it fell to Robinson who's shot canoned of a prone Gavin Hoyte and into the top corner, giving nobody any chance of stopping it.

A cruel blow for Bedford, but just reward for a City side who had not got what their performances had deserved over the last few weeks.
