It was a much changed Development Team, with several new faces, that faced a Comberton team on a difficult pitch and put in a promising, but unrewarded performance.
It was a slow and cautious start from both teams as they sussed each other out. City were putting some useful moves together but neither side looked likely to score.
The turning point came in the 25th minute when City comfortably broke up a Comberton attack, but as Tommy Rigby, on the edge of the box shaped up to clear the ball, it bounced awkwardly on the bumpy pitch, hitting his arm, and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty, allowing Comberton to make it 1 - 0.
Finding themselves a goal down against the run of play seemed to knock the confidence out of the City youngsters. The goal having the opposite effect on the home team saw them increase the pressure and finding a crack in the stretched City defence they made it 2 - 0.
With 10 minutes left to half time Comberton asked more questions of the City defence but they showed their resilience, tightened things up, and stood their ground until half time.
Half time score: Comberton 2 City Development 0.
The second half saw City take the game by the scruff of the neck, upping the pace and opening the game. Most of the play taking place in the Comberton half and City having most of the possession.
Tommy Rigby was particularly influential as City fought for every ball and created some useful moves, cutting through the Combertom midfield and often running rings around their opponents.
As City tired Comberton started to come back into the game but fresh legs from the City bench soon put their opponents on the back foot again.
In spite of having by far the majority of the play the temptation to create the perfect scoring opportunity rather than adopt a 'shoot on sight' policy meant the home keeper was never really tested and City couldn't reduce the first half arrears.
It was a relieved home side and a frustrated visiting side at the final whistle.
