It is difficult to find positives in a game that was, in effect, lost in the first fifteen minutes in an unaccustomed lack lustre display by the Development team.
It was poor defending that allowed Eaton Socon to take an 8 minute lead with a well taken header from an unmarked attacker and two minutes later it was again, an unmarked attacker whose header gave the home team their 2nd goal.
The City youngsters were obviously shaken by these early setbacks and a third goal followed in the 15th minute when a ground hugging shot from outside the box was allowed a clear passage through the defenders and squeezed into the net between the outstretched fingers of the diving keeper, Andy Jolley, and the post.
City gradually started to get into the game, but were still allowing their opponents too much time and space and a 4th goal followed 7 minutes before half time.
Half time: Eaton Socon 4 City Development 0.
Strong words in the dressing room had an effect, and it was a revitalized City team that emerged for the second half displaying more than a modicum of their usual verve and vitality in a much more equal contest.
The City defence was looking more secure and we saw some creative moves in midfield, with confidence rising as the game progressed.
In spite of the improvement City never really looked like pulling back a goal. The best chance coming when a 20 yard shot from Tom Goodjohn was pushed round the post for a corner by the diving home keeper.
The final score, in a classic, 'Game of two halves':
Eaton Socon 4 City Development Team 0.
