The Development Team is all about learning and the, at times, rather naive City youngsters were given several lessons by a Comberton Team who had previously only managed to win one point from 5 games.
From the whistle Comberton put the City side under pressure and dominated the first 10 minutes, but City took the lead in the 15th minute when Ben Tulloch, out on the right, received the ball from Marco Mendes and hit a cross-cum-shot that sneaked in at the foot of the near post.
City now had what was perhaps their best period of the game and looked like extending the lead, coming closest in the 28th minute when Jude White chipped the keeper but saw the ball hit the bar.
Comberton started to come back into the game and earned a flurry of corners, but couldn't capitalise.
Half Time: City Development 1 Comberton 0
Comberton started the second half with verve in contrast to City, who were looking a little jaded and complacent, and in the 50th minute Comberton got the inevitable equaliser.
Five minutes later Comberton were awarded a free kick just outside the box which City keeper Kieran Petty did well to dive to his left and palm away. The ball came straight back goalwards but the prostrate City keeper excelled himself as he managed to get a foot to the ball and clear it off the line.
Comberton continued to keep City pressed in their own half who, led by Henry Hall, were defending desperately, but then, in the 70 minute, against the run of play a one-two down the left between Morgan Stephens and Christian Carter, who was celebrating his 17th birthday, saw Christian slip the ball through to Josh Lowe in the box. Josh, who throughout the game was subject to more holds than a freestyle wrestler, but no sympathy from the officials, spun and hooked the ball into the net to make the score City 2, Comberton 1.
Comberton reacted by raising their game and 5 minutes later, following a corner and 'pin-ball' in the goalmouth, they again deservedly equalised the score.
With 12 minutes of normal time left the writing was on the wall for City when Jude White was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes. Despite some valiant defending by the the 10 men of the City, as the opposition sensed a win was in their grasp they upped the pressure against the flagging City youngsters. The winning 3rd goal came in the 88th minute and the final goal two minutes later.
