|Ladies & Girls
As the season draws to a close, it is hard to imagine how any of the Ladies and Girls teams could have improved on their achievements. Throughout all of the age groups, the talent and commitment shown by the teams has been remarkable. They should all feel very proud of themselves - the Club certainly is of them!
Yesterday (Saturday) saw Newmarket Town FC host the remaining Cambs FA League Cup Finals. City Under 13As kicked off proceedings at 10am by beating local rivals Coton 3-2 in an entertaining first match and in doing so, they secured both the league and cup double. Not bad for a team that is playing up a year! A very skilful and polished group of girls who have exhibited their talent both nationally and locally. Nothing seems to faze them at all.
Next on the footballing stage were the Under 12s. At 10 o'clock, they hadn't won any silverware, but three hours later they were both league and cup champions! Their rivals in the league title chase had been Netherton United from Peterborough. Netherton failed to win their final match at Saffron Walden yesterday morning which meant that City couldn't now be caught. There then followed a very confident cup final performance from City against Panthers, which resulted in a deserving 3-0 victory for the Lilywhites. It all turned out to be a very successful morning for the Under 12s. They have all developed amazingly in the last year. Well done girls.
The third and final match at Newmarket saw the Under 11s take on Coton. This was a meeting of two very good sides, who both play attractive football. I think it is fair to say that the Lilywhites edged the game with regards possession and pressure and certainly for long periods in the second half it was the Coton defence who worked overtime. However, goals win matches and City, try as they might, were unable to grab themselves an equaliser to Coton's first half strike and indeed it was that single goal that ultimately decided the match. The City Under 11s are a very talented and capable group of young girls and have had an exceptional season, but today they were just unlucky. Well played both sides - congratulations to Coton.
The success of a season is not necessarily measured in how many matches or trophies are won or how many goals are scored. Certainly in the younger age groups, it is more about providing a platform where girls can enjoy learning and developing their footballing skills in a safe, encouraging environment and where they have fun at the same time. However, the Club also know that recognising achievement is important too and this can often be exhibited by participating and succeeding in the competitions provided locally by the Cambs FA and also regionally and nationally. We know that there are some City statisticians amongst you and we think you will find the below figures very interesting:
This season, the Ladies and Girls have won: 1 x Senior County Cup, 5 x League Cups, 4 x League Titles (including 4 'Doubles'), 2 x League Runners Up and 1 x League Cup Runners Up. The Club has set a very high bar for next season!
The Club are always looking to welcome new Ladies and Girls into the 'City Footballing Family'. Give the Club a call for a chat - you can find our telephone numbers in the Ladies/Girls section of this website. And don't forget our weekly 'Wildcats' sessions which cater for girls between 5 and 11 years of age.
What a great (and very successful) evening our Fundraiser Dinner was on Friday with guest speaker John Lukic. Thank you to everyone involved, including BidfoodUK and GreeneKingIPA who generously sponsored the event. Thanks also to those that donated prizes for the auction and raffle and also to the individuals who came along, including the auction bidders. A special thumbs up to Paul Burling though who pulled the whole event together. I suspect evenings like this may become a regular event!
