Match Preview: AFC Rushden & Diamonds v City

Cambridge City complete a quartet of games against fellow promotion hopefuls tonight when they make the trip to AFC Rushden & Diamonds. The match comes on the back of a 1-1 draw at home to league leaders Moneyfields on Saturday. Prior to Saturday the Lilywhites lost 2-0 at home to AFC Dunstable, but gained a 2-1 at Hartley Wintney.

The match tonight looks sure to be another tough test for City as they take on a Rushden who are unbeaten in the last five league outings, and who replaced the Lilywhites in second spot at the weekend courtesy of a victory at Ashford Town (Middx).

You have to go back to 21 October for the last defeat that Rushden had in the league and that was at the hands of Hayes and Yeading. The squad for Rushden has plenty of experience including Ben Farrell who needs no introduction to City fans after playing for the Lilywhites in recent times. Also in the goals recently has been Tom Lorraine, who has been a prolific striker for Rushden in recent seasons.

City make the trip looking to bounce back to winning ways. The Lilywhites came close to becoming the first team to beat Moneyfields on Saturday, but couldn’t make the best of their opportunities. Recent new signing Jack Vasey impressed at the weekend and looks set to feature once more. Buster Harradine remains on the side lines due to a back injury and boss Robbie Nightingale may rotate the squad with Mason Spence and Tom Knowles possibly in line for a start after not getting 90 minutes at the weekend.

The Lilywhites will not need reminding of their last trip to AFC Rushden & Diamonds. It was an FA Cup fixture back in September 2013 when City were dumped out of the FA Cup in a match that will be remembered for Josh Dawkin slipping on his run-up when taking a penalty to give City a 3-1 advantage. Rushden went on to win the tie 3-2 and eliminate City from the competition.

There is a full league programme elsewhere tonight in the division. AFC Dunstable host Bedford, Moneyfields entertain Uxbridge whilst there is another promotion clash as Hayes and Yeading host Beaconsfield.

As usual, you can keep up to date with all the match action via the club Facebook and Twitter pages with a full report on the official website after the match.

Kick-off at Hayden Road is at 7:45pm.
