The planning committee of South Cambridgeshire District Council has today voted in favour by 8 votes to 2 to approve an application for a new stadium to be built for Cambridge City Football Club. The development at Sawston will also include a community facility.
It is the second time that the planning committee has approved the application – the first of which came in June 2014. That permission was invalidated in the Court of Appeal earlier this year following a successful objection from a local resident.
The scheme will see City move to a new 3,000-capacity stadium to the north west of Dales Manor Business Park, as well as a floodlit grass pitch, full-sized training pitch and 500 parking spaces.
Commenting on the planning approval, City Chairman Kevin Satchell said “I am delighted that it has been approved. Obviously we have been in this situation before, but it is still a big moment for us and gives us real hope once again that sooner or later we will have a place we can call home. The judgement earlier this year was a setback for us, but the decision today is a major boost for us as the project is back in our hands once more. That said, we are mindful that permission will still have to be signed off by the secretary of state, but hopefully we will not encounter the problems we had with the initial application”.
Satchell also thanked those who had supported the scheme. “We have done a lot of community engagement work and we knew that there was plenty of support for the development from the local community, and I would like to thank those who were so positive about what we were offering. We said throughout that what we were proposing was more than just a football club as it would also benefit the local community and once it is built those benefits will be there for all to see”.
He also thanked the City supporters. “This is our fifth season now without a home and I have nothing but admiration for the loyalty and dedication that our supporters have shown whilst we ground share. It is our responsibility now to deliver a stadium, and a facility which they, and the local community, will be proud of”.
There is no specific timescale for building works to begin, but this will become clear once the secretary of state has given approval.
