Sawston: An update

The hopes of Cambridge City Football Club relocating to a new stadium site in Sawston have received a boost with news that a new planning application could be heard again in the near future.

The Lilywhites were dealt a blow in February when their previous planning permission was quashed following a ruling that South Cambridgeshire District Council had not given clear reasoning to override the recommendation to refuse the original application.

But City now hope to re-submit their application and this could be heard by the planning committee of South Cambridgeshire District Council within the next few months.

The site to the north of the village of Sawston will see a new stadium for City plus another pitch with a 4G artificial surface as well as land which will be donated back to the parish council. Re-submitting the application will form the main part of the process, but the club will also need to repeat some of the previous processes behind their successful application which was given the green light in 2014. These include the possibility of another public consultation with local residents as well as a meeting with the parish council.

City Chairman Kevin Satchell said “Since the setback in February we have worked hard to speak to all relevant parties so that we can get the process back on track. Clearly we have a long way to go still, but I am pleased that our new application is likely to be heard in the coming months”.

Satchell also said that the club was looking forward to engaging with the local community again at a new public consultation. He said “We have had some real positive feedback from the local community just recently with many disappointed at the latest planning setback. We have stated all along that what we are offering is more than just a football club and there is a growing feeling now of the benefit the development will bring to the local area. We certainly want the local community to feel part of this as much as our own supporters and that will be one of the many messages that we will be looking to get across during the consultation process”.
