Match Preview: City v Salisbury

After the dramatic finale against Leamington on Tuesday night, Cambridge City face another tough looking fixture at Milton Road tomorrow when they entertain Salisbury City. The visitors find themselves in the Zamaretto League this season after being demoted two divisions from the Blue Square Premier during the closed season.

With that, there have been a number of changes to playing personnel at Salisbury as well as a new manager. Darrell Clarke has taken over the role of Player Manager with the Whites following the departure of the previous incumbent, Tommy Widdrington who has taken up the post of Assistant Manager at Southend United.

Clarke, a former player with Mansfield Town and Hartlepool United has already overseen two victories this season at home to Stourbridge and at Bashley on Tuesday night. The Whites won 3-0 and 2-0 on both occasions, with Clarke scoring a goal a piece in both matches.

Elsewhere, the Whites forward line consists of Ben Joyce who has plenty of league experience and lists Plymouth, Aston Villa, Swindon and Torquay as his former clubs, and like the manager, has already found the net this season.

City meanwhile come into the game on the back of a 3-2 victory over Leamington on Tuesday night, and on paper, the game on Saturday is the third of 4 tough looking encounters that the Lilywhites have to start the season.

Gary Roberts has concerns over the left back slot. James Krause is struggling to be fit following his ankle injury that he sustained at Brackley last weekend. Meanwhile, Lee Chaffey could be a doubt following the knock he received in the latter stages of the match against Leamington on Tuesday night. This means that Milton Elenge could team up with Dave Theobald at the centre of defence again, and if Chaffey doesn’t make it, then Joey Abbs could be an option to fill the left back slot. There are no other injury concerns, so David Kolodynski and Craig Hammond will resume their strike partnership up front.

The last time that Salisbury were at Milton Road was during season 2006 -2007, when both clubs were in the Conference South. On that occasion, the Lilywhites lost 3-1 with Lee Chaffey finding the net for City. Salisbury went onto win the Conference South title the same year. Amazingly, the game on Saturday brings two sides together who have suffered demotions in recent years, but perhaps the most keenly fought contest between the both clubs was in season 1985-86 when City pipped Salisbury to the Southern League, Southern Division title.

As usual there will be updates on the club messageboard throughout the game, and Andy Abbott will be providing live reports from Milton Road on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire during the afternoon.

A reminder that City fans can get involved on the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire phone-in after the match either by texting or discussing the match live on air. Tune into Saturday Sport after the match on 96FM for more details.

A good following of supporters is expected from Wiltshire, and kick-off at Milton Road is 3:00pm.
