Pre-Season Friendly: Cambridge Utd XI 0 City Reserves 2

On friday evening the Reserves played a United XI at St Catherines Sports Ground.

The United team was made up of year 1 & 2 scholars and a couple of players who had played the night before against City at Milton Road. We had problems with our squad as injuries to Sam Hobson, Luke Youngs & James Howard ruled them out and a couple were on holiday.

From the 14 players we did have; 12 were 16 years old and 1 was 17. Neil O'Donohue our player/coach was our other player.

As you would expect for long periods of the game we were chasing the ball as our opponents moved it around well. To our credit we defended magnificently with the back four and keeper Richard Brandon in outstanding form.

Our goal did lead a charmed life at times, but we did keep trying to play. We were rewarded with a fine goal in the 26th minute. Brett Wyman and Shaun Flack combined to find George Darling his excellent pass sent Joey Nicholson away and he drilled the ball past the advancing keeper. Unfortunately we lost debutant Ben Robinson a couple of minutes later with a back injury.

The 2nd half saw Adam Naylor replace Darling and Liam Robinson come on for Callum Walter at right back.

With the breeze at our backs we created one or two half chances. Ben Sawyer looking a constant threat for us. O'Donohue made way after an hour, not bad for someone who had not played an 11 a side match for nearly 5 years. United were still creating chances and Brandon was at his best to tip over a couple of long range efforts. Tom Sapsford at the heart of our defence was in dominant form as were the other defenders.

Our second goal came 5 minutes from time when brilliant play by Sawyer sent Naylor clear. He clipped it past the keeper and although a defender scrambled it off the line, Nicholson was on hand to score and wrap up the match.

Team: Brandon, Walter, Sapsford, O'Donohue, Wyman, Balde, B.Robinson, Flack (c), Nicholson, Sawyer, Darling, Subs all used : Smith, L.Robinson, Naylor.
