It has to be one of the most one-sided 2-0 victories many of us have ever seen, and I am pleased we got the points although we had to wait until the 89th minute for the breakthrough.
Going into the game, I decided to rest Steve Gentle and bring Laurie Stewart in at right back and then move John Kennedy to midfield, as Robbie Nightingale had not fully recovered from a flu virus.
I didn’t expect the team to be so dominant, and to be honest, expected more from Oxford. I think they were hoping to catch us on the break, which to be fair, the longer the game went on, you could perhaps see that happening due to us not taking advantage of the ridiculous amount of opportunities that we had.
I think if you were a neutral in the ground, you would have to take your hat off to the Oxford keeper, because he put in a massive effort and had an inspired game. Jamie Barker was guilty of missing about three chances, but I think it was more or less down to the keeper pulling off a string of remarkable saves.
So, like everyone else, I was immensely relieved to get the breakthrough. I thought James Krause had an outstanding game for us, and was the deserved recipient of the goal. From our point of view, it was a well worked move that lead to the goal and the ball through from Tony Burke to Krause was excellent. James hit it really well, and for once, the keeper had no chance.
That goal basically knocked the resilience out of Oxford and it was great to get a second goal, which our performance deserved. Ramon Calliste took the chance well, and showed good composure to beat the keeper. Ramon is here on a match to match basis and we will see how it works out for him, but he is pleased to be back, knows the set-up of the club as well as some of the lads from last year, so we’ll see how it works out for him.
I still believe that we can be in the play-off mix at the end of the season. There is no doubt in my mind that we are a top five team and the performance and result yesterday should give the boys the renewed confidence after our recent spell, and kick on from here.
This coming week we have Mildenhall on Tuesday in the CIC and then Swindon away next Saturday. For Tuesday night, I will ring the changes and will bring in those who didn’t feature yesterday. So supporters can expect the likes of Milton Elenge to get a game. At Swindon, it will be a tough game for us as it is not an easy place to go. They are struggling, but at this stage of the season it means nothing, as they will be looking for points to get themselves out of trouble.
Finally, it was great to hear the Shed in good voice on Saturday. The players really appreciate the support of everyone, and it adds a good bit of atmosphere in the ground when the Shed is in full cry.
