On the Field
No game last Saturday for the Lilywhites due to a late postponement at Chippenham. City had already arrived at the ground when the referee decided to call the game off due to a frozen area in front of the stand. The match has been re-arranged for Tuesday 20 April.
The game on Tuesday night at Stourbridge did go ahead, albeit on a heavy surface. Stourbridge, determined to seek revenge for the 6-1 drubbing at Milton Road seven days earlier, stormed to a 3-1 victory. The goal for City coming from Neil Midgley.
On the player front, we welcome Ricky Miller who has signed from Stamford, and also say farewell to Matt Haniver. Supporters may remember Milton Elenge from pre-season. He is back training with the club and may feature in the home clash with Bashley at Milton Road tomorrow. Jamie Barker is also looking to get back to fitness and there is an outside chance that he maybe available for selection too.
Off the Field
The main news of the week is that City have announced a 3 year groundshare deal with the option of an extension with Newmarket Town. Between now and 31 March it will be ‘all hands to the pump’ in getting the ground at Cricketfield Road up to a C grade so that City can compete in the end of season play-offs. The club is asking for any supporters who have any time on their hands to come forward and offer help of any kind. If you think you can assist, then please contact Steve O’Donohue on 07867 810944.
The semi final draw of the Cambs Invitation Cup has taken place. It will see City play either Mildenhall or CRC which, if the latter get through it would be a repeat of the final from last year. The other Semi-Final sees Wisbech take on Soham.
The club is also looking to recruit volunteers to help with their football in the community programme. This is a very rewarding part of the club, and has been widely recognised throughout Cambridge as a key part of City being a labelled a ‘community club’. The main work is to assist on days such as the forthcoming Match Day Experience. You need to be enthusiastic, patient and keen to spend your time promoting the club while simultaneously giving local children a memorable afternoon. If this sounds like you, and you have (or are prepared to get) a CRB check, please get in touch with me via the office or call (01223) 357973
Also, in the final few months before our historic move from Milton Road, the Football in the Community team hope to have as many school penalty shoot outs as possible to give lots of local children the chance to get a taste of the City Ground Experience. If your child would like to get a last chance to take to the hallowed turf - primary schools on Saturdays and secondary schools on week nights - please get in touch by contacting the club on the number above and we'll see if we can fit you in.
The Craft Fair on Saturday 27 March is beginning to come together with around a dozen stalls so far being taken. The price of stalls sized between 4ft and 8ft are from £12 – 18.00. Anyone wishing to book one should contact Karen Dunn on 07956 025009. We are also looking for fans to help out on the day selling refreshments, setting up, and manning the tombola stall. If you are around between 10:00am and 4:00pm on the day, and would like to help out with any of these duties, then please get in contact.
A reminder that the Supporters Trust AGM is scheduled for Wednesday 24 February. The Trust board have recently sent out agendas to all members. With the Newmarket move very much at the forefront, put this date in your diary as know doubt there will be plenty more updates at the meeting.
And Finally, the Bashley game tomorrow is being sponsored by Martin and Geoff Spencer. One of their guests will be Bob Wilson. Those supporters with very long memories will remember Bob making his 1st team debut for City at Xmas 1958 and played in the inaugural floodlight match against West Ham two months later. He will be in the Legends Bar after the game for the man of the match presentation and will be pleased to speak to any City fans especially those who can remember him from his playing days at the club. His return to Milton Road coincides with the very week that the club announces the move to Newmarket, so no doubt there will be plenty of nostalgia in the air.
