Like everyone else, I really don’t know how we failed to win the game. Even before they scored, we should have been in front, and their goal was only one of two chances they had all afternoon.
With their goal, obviously it was a good hit and an equally good save from Zac, but I thought we were just a bit slower than usual reacting to get it clear, and subsequently it let them in for the rebound.
In terms of our back-line, clearly we knew that Dave Theobald would be out following his sending off at Truro, but we were hampered by Lee Chaffey going down with flu on Friday. But, we are in a situation this season where we have like for like replacements, so it was good to have Steve Gentle available who can fill in at centre-back.
I was pleased with the response following the goal, and we played at the same tempo and were forcing numerous openings. I was especially pleased with Lee Clarke on his full debut for us. He had a number of opportunities, one of which hit the inside of the post, and he was very unfortunate not to open his account.
At half-time there was a degree of frustration in the dressing room, but I told them to keep going as we were knocking on the door and it was only going to be a matter of time before that door opened. That said, I thought we were very lucky in the early stages of the second half as Tiverton had an excellent chance, and if they had put that away, it could quite easily have been game over.
However, we still created chances, but with none of them being converted, I thought it was going to be one of those days. So I was pleased when we eventually got the breakthrough. With our goal, it was actually aimed for John Frendo, and once again he showed good awareness to get something on it.
Once we got the equaliser, I thought we would win it, and you would be hard pressed not to find someone who didn’t agree with that sentiment, as it had been total domination from our point of view. But it wasn’t to be, and we just couldn’t find the touch and just lacked something in the final third, and if we had that, we could have quite easily netted six.
Obviously a draw maintains our unbeaten start to the season, but from our perspective, it was definitely two points dropped. The frustrating thing about it is that we could have made ground on Farnborough if we won, as everyone else around us with the exception of Bashley drew.
The next week is obviously a big one for the club. The game at Farnborough is going to be tough, as Lee Chaffey will probably be a doubt, and Dave Theobald is also a doubt due to his hamstring injury he picked up in the pre-match warm up against Northampton last week. In addition, Neil Midgley has picked up a slight knock on his knee, and we won’t know until tomorrow how that has developed. So it maybe that we are just going to have to run with a squad of 14 players for the Farnborough game.
In terms of priorities, the Hinckley game is the one everyone is looking forward to, and I would be confident that we would have a full compliment available to us by then. We are under no illusions that it will be a tough game for us. They have some good players in their side and had a good win at Stafford yesterday, and are in the top half of Conference North. But, everyone knows how we can play, we are a stronger unit than last year, and it’s a home tie for us, and I hope that we get a good crowd in Milton Road to support us.
Finally, we will not be pursuing our interest in Craig Dobson anymore, as we couldn’t agree terms with him.
