Ladies Teams
Cambridge City LFC 1 - 0 Lewes LFC
Sunday 16th December: South East Combination
Lewes arrived at the City Ground 2nd in the league and chasing top spot, but City Ladies prevented them from getting there and gained an important three points thanks to a superb 2nd half strike from Carly Brown. Picking up the ball wide on the right, she cut inside and struck a 30 yard shot high into the Lewes net.
After an even first half, City picked up the pace in the 2nd. Shona Kelly and Jody Lapish began to dominate in midfield, new signing from Leicester City Vicky Lines gave the team better balance going forward and livewire Brown caused trouble down both flanks. Leanne Tucker made several forward bursts from right back as pressure mounted on the Lewes defence. It paid off when Brown stuck her wonder goal in the 75th minute.
Lewes came back and threw everything at City, but the outstanding defence of Britta Osterstedt, Nicola Geoghan, Jordan Holland and Leanne Tucker stood firm, though Tafadzwa Mhundury also had to pull off some outstanding saves to preserve City’s lead. As Lewes chased the game City could have extended their lead but Sophia Piotrowski was cynically brought down as she broke away in the closing minutes; the referee showed leniency in showing the Lewes defender a yellow card.
The Combination now has a Winter break – City’s next match is against Enfield Town at Milton Road on 6 January.
