Brandon 6-a-side Tournament posted by Claire Tyrrell

Saturday 18th June 2005

Cambridge City U-11’s Girls six-a-side Brandon Tournament Winners.

Cambridge City won the Brandon Tournament
There were six teams in their group one, the results were as follows.

City 1 Nitnesham Wasps 0 (Leighanne Robe)
City 3 Waveney Youth A 0 (Leighanne Robe 2, Hannah Lock)
City 0 Brandon A 0
City 6 Bury Town 0 (Laura Mills 4, Leighanne Robe, Hannah Lock)

Cambridge City went through as group one winners into the semi final against group two runners up Waveney Herons who were favourites City won the game 1-0 (Laura Mills).
City then went into the final and won the match 1-0 against Bohemians Youth (Leighanne Robe).

This was a great day for City U-11’s, good weather and a first time playing together for some of the girls. But you wouldn’t of known it going through the whole tournament without conceding a single goal. City had to beat Bury Town by three goals to go into the semi finals which they did in fact by double that margin.
In the semi final they met Waveney Herons who were favourites to win the tournament. Waveney were not a physical side so City used their strength to beat them.
We had to wait to see who we would meet in the final as Brandon A and Bohemians YFC had to settle their match with a penalty shoot out, in the end it was to be Bohemians YFC whom City would meet in the final.
City had great support in the final from the other teams watching. The City girls as a whole done them selves proud, an excellent side in which I feel we won because the whole team are stars!!

Team : Kayleigh Whitehead, Jade Gent, Emma Calvey, Jennifer Turner, Laura Mills, Hannah Lock & Leighanne Robe.

S-tech Girls Cup final

Saturday 14th May 2005

City failed to capitalise on a great performance from the girls. Early chances went begging and this proved crucial against league winners Royston Town.
With the scores level at 0-0 at full time, the game went into extra time and Royston Town scored a good goal to take the lead. City's heads went down and a further two goals were scored in quick succession.
The score didn’t reflect the play, however well done to Royston Town in winning the league and cup.
Never mind girls there’s always next season.

7th May Bedford Under 16 v Cambridge City Under 16 posted by Claire Tyrrell

City went into the last game of the season knowing that they would finish runners up in the Weetabix League, their opponents had to win to finish on the same number of points as City so the game had a little edge.

Bedford showed that they meant business and went 3-0 up in the first 25 minutes. City were slow to the ball and second to most challenges and a heavy defeat looked likely. Then a spark was lit, centre forward Emma Farr was put through on goal and fired a left foot shot over the keeper. City came to life and within minutes were on the attack and forcing the Bedford keeper into action. Becky Hewson received the ball on the left edge of the Bedford 18 yard box, turned the defender and rifled an unstoppable shot past the keeper at the near post. On the stroke of half time Becky fired in a corner from the left for Jordan Holland to force home at the near post. Three goals in 12 minutes and 3-3 at half time.

The second half was much tighter as both sides probed for a winner. The heavens opened and gusts of wind made the conditions difficult for a while. A failure to clear the ball midway through the half let in Bedford to regain the lead. City pressed for the equaliser, Becky Hewson going close on two occasions with long range efforts. Bedford held firm until the final whistle.

City were slow to start the game and were punished but a good fightback gave them heart and in the end were unlucky not to get a draw.

A good season for the Under 16's finishing joint runners up, with Bedford, and behind League winners Peterborough

30th April - City Under 10's v Tottenham Hotspurs Under 10's posted by Claire Tyrrell

This was to be a challenging friendly for the City girls whose opponents are top of the Herts Girls League.

Tottenham had lots of possession in the opening few minutes but City soon got to grips with their opponents and created some good moves of their own. Spurs forward Laura Newby had the first shot on goal but Lauren Rouse made a great save. City responded with Hannah Seymour-Shove and Beatrice Fitzsimons going close to scoring. Midway througn the first half Spurs took the lead, Bobbi Cubberley scoring with an easy chance as City were caught ball watching. City responded immediately with Lola Boulter running down the left and crossing for Beatrice Fitzsimons to fire home into the bottom lefthand corner. City pounced again before half time and went 2-1 up when Lola Boulter latched onto a loose ball and lifted the ball over the Spurs keeper as she lay on the ground. Both teams came off at half time to raptuous applause from the two sets of supporters.

The second half became a midfield battle with City's defensive 4 of Jasmine Coulson, Sophie Smith, Nuala Wayne and Hannah Seymour-Shove all playing well breaking down the Spurs attacks. City held on until the whistle for an excellent win against a strong side.

A fantastic display by the City girls, good luck to Spurs for the rest of their season.
Girl of the Match - Lola Boulter.

30th April City Under 11,s away to Tottenham Hotspurs posted by Claire Tyrrell

City Under 11's went down to Tottenham to play this friendly and narrowly lost 2-1, conceding two goals in the last 10 minutes.

City were slow to start but soon got into their stride with Jennifer Turner and Samara Nche going close. After good work between the same two players it was Samara Nche who put an unstoppable shot past the Spurs keeper. Robyn Phillips and Hayley Takacs both worked hard on the flanks and City looked the more likely to score again.

It was inevitable that Spurs would have some possession and as the game wore on they began to dominate. For a time Jade Gent and Ellie Cullum held firm in the City defence and Kayleigh Whitehead made some good saves.

City tried to extend their lead but the Spurs keeper made some good saves. City eventally tired and Spurs scored twice in the latter stages of the game. A bit harsh for the City players who deserved at least a draw.

Overall it was a good experience for the City girls and the game was played in a good spirit. Girl of the match - Jade Gent.

23rd April City Under 9's v Burwell Under 9's posted by Claire Tyrrell

City fielded a very young side including 2 six year olds and put in a good performance only to lose 2-1 to a strong Burwell side.

Burwell took the lead against the run of play, City were playing good football and keeping a good team shape and soon equalised when Lydia Sapsford scored. City held firm until the last minute when Burwell took the lead again, there was no time for City to respond.

Sophie Smith led the way with an impressive display despite missing a penalty in the first half. Zoe Lander and Brooke Rapley played well at the back and Georgia Moule made some vital saves. Lucy Parker was everywhere in midfield and Jasmine Gent made some great tackles.

Well done girls

The Under 10's completed their league fixtures with a convincing 10-1 victory against Haverhill.

Saturday 16th April 2005

The top two sides met in the U-10 S-Tech girls friendly league, with City coming out clear winners. Buckden started well with City struggling to put their passing game together. City forward Hannah Seymour-Shove eased the home sides fears with a neat finish and Lola Boulter added a second shortly after with a great individual effort. Boulter scored her second and City’s third just before half time after good work by the influential Nuala Wayne.
In the second half Beatrice Fitzsimons came out of goal and scored two quality goals before Hannah Seymour-Shove had the final word with her second goal. This was a good team effort against a well-organized Buckden team, well done girls; girl of the match Lauren Rouse.

City played better for the second half but still something or someone to change the game and that came from Robyn Phillips who came on and scored a good goal. Robyn also laid a lovely ball behind the St Neots defence for Jennifer Turner to latch on to and score. With good football from both teams Ellie Cullen scored City’s fourth goal.
Edie Tucker City’s manager “We played good football, however Robyn Phillips made the difference after coming on. Well done to all the girls”.

Saturday 16th April 2005

City U-12 girls completed their league fixtures with a draw against higher placed Bar Hill. This was a really entertaining game with goalmouth scrambles at both ends.
City took the lead near the end of the first half with a well-taken goal by Kerry Massey.
At the start of the second half, Bar Hill started the brighter and equalized when the referee deemed the ball had crossed the goal line despite the valiant efforts by City keeper Georgie Church. The Bar Hill keeper made several good saves to frustrate City, in particular Ella Gough and Gemma Clark. With five minutes left, Stephanie Anderson looked to have won the game for City but the referee allowed play to continue even though most people could see the ball at least a foot over the line.
Never mind girls, a good performance and a good season.
See you at the player of the year evening (Saturday 21st May 2005).

April 16th City U16 v Kettering Town U16 posted by Claire Tyrrell

An excellent entertaining game of football from two of the regions best sides, played in a good spirit both both teams applauding each other off the pitch at the end.

City were a goal down inside 3 minutes with poor concentration in the defence. This spurred the girls on and they applied pressure on the Kettering goal forcing several corners. They equalised on 27 minutes when Tracey Carter was put through and fired home from 15 yards. 1-1 at half time.

The City girls were told at half time to put more pressure on the Kettering players to force errors. This paid off after 55 minutes when pressure from Tracey Carter allowed the ball to run to Becky Hewson who fired the ball into the top corner from 20 yards despite a valliant effort by the Kettering keeper. Two minutes later Shona Kelly went on a solo run past three players and sidefooted the ball past the keeper. Unfortunately City sat back and relaxed allowing Kettering back into the game. Defensive errors allowed 2 goals to be conceded and with 15 minutes to go it was 3-3. Eight minutes from time Becky Hewson was put through on goal but unselfishly she squared the ball to Sarah Heneker who slotted the ball home in off the post.

City held on for three vital points and now travel to Bedford on May 7th with at least the chance of finishing runners up in the Weetabix League, other results could allow City a chance of finishing top.

Sat 9th April City U12 v Comberton. posted by Claire Tyrrell

City girls can feel hard done by as they put on an excellent dislpay against a strong Comberton side. The result was a 1-1 draw.

In the first half City played some good football and the visitors did not have a shot on goal. Kerry Massey put City ahead after charging down a clearance with the ball rebounding into the net. Comberton came into the game more in the second half but City still looked the more likely to score. Gemma Clark, Sam Lander and Hannah Storey all went close but could not seal the victory. With 10 minutes to go Comberton scored against the run of play.

The girls were disappointed not to win but played some good football. Well Done.

Saturday 9th April 2005

City were really glad of a point from this game, at three nil down in the first half to get a draw was a good outcome.
“This would have killed a lot of teams off,” said Eddie Tucker City manager. “Yes I am disappointed that we didn’t take all three points but I’m happy that City showed they didn’t give up”.
Second half City fielded a more attacking team, which paid off. Jennifer Turner got two goals to bring it back to 3-2 with some excellent team play. Hayley Takacs got City’s third goal. 3-3 game on.
Histon sat back at 3-0 up but had to come out at 3-3, their first attack of the second half they got a corner which City didn’t clear 4-3 to Histon.
Histon must of thought they had done enough, however Jennifer Turner got City’s forth goal, which gave her a hat trick.
At the final whistle City must have been the happier team after a good comeback.
Well done to the whole team.

9th April Cambridge City U16 v Ise Lodge U16 posted by Claire Tyrrell

Ise Lodge were last seasons Weetabix League winners but are a shadow of that team this year. City dominated the game against only 9 players and easily won 8-1.

City scored 6 goals in the first half including 2 from Sarah Heneker and solo efforts from Shona Kelly and Megan Carpenter. Jordan Holland scored from a corner with a precise volley.

Sarah Freestone scored a header from a corner in the second half and Sarah Heneker completed her hattrick. Ise Lodge contributed with an unfortunate own goal.

City had many chances and some were guilty of easy misses in front of goal. They shall remain nameless !!! Becky Hewson was unlucky, rattling the crossbar three times from 20 yards out.
T
Three more points and still in with a chance of winning the League. Keep up the good work next week at home to Kettering United.

2nd April - Sunnyside Warriors 1 Cambridge City Under 16 5 posted by Claire Tyrrell

A good win for the City girls despite being several first choice players short with school holidays etc.

They took command from the kick off and were soon 2-0 up with Becky Hewson on target following good passing moves.
A City corner led to a Sunnyside breakaway and they pulled a goal back. Tracey Carter was then on target to restore City's 2 goal advantage.

Sam Isaacson came out of goal for the second half and made a good contribution to City's play making some good tackles and passes. Lisa Bowman had a good solo run passing three defenders before putting the ball past the Sunnyside keeper. Tracey Carter added her second before the end.

City dominated the play and should have scored more but 3 points were secured and with three games left there is still a chance to win the League. Keep going to the end Girls.

There were chances for both sides but none were taken untill just before half time acting captain Gemma Clark managed to put the Sky Blues 2-0 up. The game was played in good spirit but there was to be no more goals in the game, well done to both teams for a very entertaining match.

She added to her tally shortly after following a fine pass from Beatrice Fitzsimons. City keeper Lauren Rouse came to the rescue when she saved a penalty just before half time.
Beatrice Fitzsimons increased City’s lead five minutes into the second half after good work by Sophie Smith and Amber Martin. Buckden responded by scoring a deserved goal despite the efforts of City keeper Mia Wayne. However Lola Boulter won the game for City with a great run and shot. Hannah Plumb nearly added a fifth for City but the Buckden keeper saved her stabbed left footed shot. Buckden added a second goal with five minutes left and could have scored a third but for a great tackle by Jasmine Coulson.

In the second half the pressure resulted in more openings created. Becky Hewson scored the second, sidefooting past the keeper after being put through from midfield. Jodie Tucker was in the right place to score the third after good work from Sarah Heneker on the right. Becky Hewson finished the scoring with a long range effort which the keeper fumbled and could not prevent the ball crossing the line.
Ise Lodge scored a late consolation 2 minutes from time as City lost concentration.
A good win, Bedford Girls in the semi final next month.

City 9 - Godmanchester Rovers 0 posted by Nancy Hamlin

CAMBRIDGE CITY V GODMANCHESTER ROVERS

On a cold and snowy afternoon the first round of the Invitation Cup saw Cambridge City faced Godmanchester Rovers. City had brought some reserve players in giving them a chance to experience first team football. City got off to a good start with striker Nat Hoyles and Sophie Hurst giving Godmanchester a torrid time with great link up play from wingers Jo Gomm and Becky Hewson. Nat Hoyles got the opener with a break through the center of Godmanchester's defence slotting it past the keeper. City's strike force was too formidable for Godmanchester to contain with Nat Hoyles hitting 3 more goals before half time and winger Jo Gomm scoring 1 and Sophie Poitrowska also scoring bringing the total to 6-0 at the half time interval.

The second half was much of the same with Nat Hoyles bagging a double hat-trick and Sophie getting her second. To their credit, Godmanchester never gave up and worked extremely hard to limit the opportunities for City in the second half. Mid fielder Sarah Gee also hit the bar but was unlucky. Final score 9-0

Under 12 v Cottenham Feb 12th 2005 posted by Claire Tyrrell

City Under 12 travelled to Cottenham expecting a close game based on previous matches. The result was 3-2 to City but could have been more had three goals not been disallowed by the referee.

In difficult conditions City started brightly, passing the ball well and creating chances to score. The first goal came from a Gemma Clark corner, Sam Adams tapping the ball home at the far post. City could not extend their lead and Cottenham equalised just before half time.

In the second half City were against the wind but seemed to play better. They were soon in front again when Gemma Clark scored after a good run at the Cottenham defence. With 10 minutes to go Cottenham again levelled the score and then looked the more likely to go on and win. City did not give in and with two minutes to go Micheala Wilcox crossed from the wing toward the goal, the ball ran under the unfortunate Cottenham keeper to give City a 3-2 win.

Three good points for the Girls, don't forget training on Thursday.

City Whites U12's V Harvesters posted by Claire Tyrrell

from a freezing afternoon in Meldreth, the girls played really well.
The first half we played really well with about 80% of the possession being played in the Harvesters half, with shots from Ivy, Kiera, Gemma, Zoe Fisher all just going wide.there keeper also made some great saves to keep the scores level, but with about 6 minutes from half time Gemma Clare had a shot just in side the penalty area witch curled in the left hand corner, 1-0 to city. Olivia Basten-Pitt made it 2-0 a couple of minutes later with a similar shot.
The 2nd half started once again great for us with a lot of persession and was only going to be a matter of time before we scored again, with some great build up play the ball found it's way to Zoe Fisher who made it 3-0, it was soon to be 4-0 when Ivy smith slotted one in. The 5th was scored once again by Zoe Fisher, but it was a great team display on a very windy day. Well done girls,

City 3 - Godmanchester Rovers 1 (CUP GAME) posted by Nancy Hamlin

6th February 2005
Cambridge City started this game well and dominated the opening 20 minutes taking the lead on 25 minutes with a well-taken goal from Martha Burrough.

Angela Arnold felt she had a legitimate goal ruled out, as the Godmanchester keeper seemed to claw the ball back from behind the line. Arnold then went on to hit the post twice during the game. City continued to dominate with creating plenty of chances. Kate Bunch in the City goal had very little to do during the first half.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Beccy Morely was replaced with a recurrence of an ankle injury. Lisa Hurley came on and Citys shape had to be adjusted. Gomanchester started to press and with 10 minutes to go they snatched a very good equaliser. Rovers continued to play well and looked as if they had won it but Eunice Alexander cleared the ball off the line. Charlotte Smith also felt she was denied a penalty late on.

The tie went into extra time. City again started the stronger. Shona Kelly won the ball in central midfield and made a very strong run into the penalty box before she blasted the ball low past the Rovers keeper. Confidence flowed back into the City play and Martha Burrough finished the tie with a third goal late in the first period of extra time.

Jordan Holland played magnificently at the centre of the City defence and Sarah Freestone is developing into a very dependable solid full back. Michelle Cook played her first game back for several weeks and worked well alongside Shona Kelly.

The final score was Godmanchester Rovers 1 Cambridge City Res 3 after extra time

Stevenage Boro Vixens 0 - City 5 posted by Nancy Hamlin

30th January 2005

This was City's last game of the season in the league with a trip down to Stevenage on a heavy muddy pitch. City opened their account through right winger Jo Gomm hitting a right footed drive which Stevenage Keeper could not hold and City going 1-0 up. City were playing well in the bad conditions, with strikers Sophie Hurst and Anneli Macdonald causing Stevenage's defence lots of problems. City's second goal was another strike by Jo Gomm which rebounded off the keeper into the path of Midfielder Sophia Piotrowska to chest home from two yards. Left midfielder Carly Brown got City's third with a nice strike over the top of the keeper. 3-0 at half time. Second half was much of the same with City camped in Stevenage's half. With the odd counter attack from Stevenage which centre halves Emma Roberts and Hannah Goodchild dealt with comfortably. City's fourth came through Carly Brown again, turning two defenders on the edge of the box and driving it hard and low under the keeper. With 5 minutes to go Sophia Piotrowska hit a high ball in from the right flank which floated in the top left over the keeper. Final score 5-0!

City were playing well and took the lead through Gemma Clark. Kerry Massey also netted but the goal was ruled out for handball.
Cottenham equalised with 10 minutes to go and with extra time looming netted a second with virtually the last kick of the game.
Hard luck girls - keep training and working hard and the victories will come.

On a cold Sunday afternoon City girls put in a very lack-lustre performance away to Sutton who were three nil up in the first few minutes and eventually won 6-1.

Jan 29th City U13 Sky Blues v City U13 Whiyes posted by Claire Tyrrell

City have two teams in the Under 13 League and they came up against each other today.
The Sky Blues were too strong for the Whites with good passing and movement but the Whites gave them too much respect. The Sky Blues scored 12 without reply.
Charley Moore led the way with 5 goals, Natalie Richardson, Rebecca Hunneyball and Hannah Mills each scored twice and Aimee Harrison scored the other.

Jan 29th City U10 v Milton posted by Claire Tyrrell

A very young City team went to Milton and played some good football to secure a 5-1 victory. The whole squad contributed to the win. Lydia Sapsford and Jasmine Coulson went close in the first few minutes. Amber Martin and Sophie Smith were strong in midfield and Jasmine Gent and Suzi Cullum were untroubled at the beck. When Milton did breakthrough Lauren Rouse in goal was in commanding form.
City were 4 goals to the good by half time. Hannah Plumb opened the scoring after 15 minutes and soon after added her second. Hannah Seymour-Shove tapped in the third and Nuala Wayne scored the fourth. Lauren Rouse scored the fifth asfter coming out of goal in the second half.
The City youngsters look good for the future.

City 4 - Haverhill 4 posted by Nancy Hamlin

January 24th 2005

City got off to a good start with striker Sophie Hurst latching onto a ball over the top and placing it in to the top right hand corner in the second minute. City got another on the tenth minute from mid-fielder Liz Pamplin receiving the ball on the edge of the D, placing it right of the keeper. Sophie Hurst got her second on 30 minutes from a great through ball from the mid-field. Haverhill kept their heads up and got two goals back just before half time through City's mid-fielders loosing the ball and the defence were all over the place. 3-2 at half time. City came out strong second half but could not put the ball in the back of the net. Haverhill got a corner which City's defence did not clear and was poked home by Rachel Mann. 3-3. City made some substitutions bringing on Carly Brown and Nat Hoyles. City got their fourth from a corner whipped in by Carly Brown, which Haverhill could not clear and Nat Hoyels steered it home. With four minutes to go Haverhill hit back again with another corner which dropped to Pablina Beasley to rifle in off the underside of the bar. Final score 4 all.

City should not let a 3-0 lead slip way, but hats off to Haverhill who ground out a draw.

Jan 22nd City Under 11 v Hormead Hares posted by Claire Tyrrell

Despite the exremely cold weather City were fired up and scored 5 goals without reply.

Ellie Cullum was first on the scoresheet. Hares then pressed forward to equalise and Kags Whitehead in goal made two good saves to keep the ball out. City made a good move forward and were rewarded when Jennifer Turmer added to City's lead.

In the second half Melissa Wilson fired home for City's third after her first shot was blocked. Hayley Tackacs added a fourth and fifth, one from a good solo run. Emma Calvey, Robyn Phillips, Jade Gent and Kayleigh Whitehead din not score but worked hard all over the pitch, defending well and creating good opportunities going forward.

A good result against an improving Hormead side.

Jan 22nd Under 16 away to Kettering United posted by Claire Tyrrell

City Girls went down 2-0 to a strong Kettering United team. City had both goalkeepers injured so Becky Hewson went in goal. Two others had other commitments so City were down to just 11 players.

The eleven battled hard but went down to a goal at the end of each half after chances to both take the lead in the first half and equalise in the second half. Sarah Heneker and Megan Carpenter both played very well and the team deserved more for their efforts.

Hopefully back to full strength next week.

City 4 - Royston 1 posted by Nancy Hamlin

After three defeats in the last three games City needed to get back to their winning ways. The first half was pretty even with Royston getting the first goal from a free kick 30 yards out which Zoe Walker rifled into the top right hand corner. City hit straight back with a header from left winger Becky Hewson for striker Sophie Hurst to poke home. 1-1 at half time.

Second half City picked up their game with mid-fielder Liz Pamplin headering City's second from a corner from Sophia Piotrowska. Liz Pamplin got her second with another header from a corner. Royston hit the post twice with 10 mins to go but City's substitute Jo Gomm got City's fourth with a low left footed drive which skimmed under the keeper. Making the final score 4-1 to City. And a win that City desperately needed.

The other team members Kags Whitehead, Melissa Wilson, Jade Gent and Kayleigh Whitehead made it a great team effort.

Fakenham 3 - City Reserves 0 posted by Nancy Hamlin

Sunday January 9th 2005

Football is a very simple game but sometimes it is very weird and wonderful. In the opposite fixture earlier this season the final score was 4-4. After a terrible start City turned things around and salvaged a point.

This time around City started well; created opportunities to score; worked hard throughout but lost 3-0. This was a much better all round performance by everyone but the result suggests it was worse. Credit should go to a very strong Fakenham side that will surely be playing in the premiere division next season.

The game was played in a good spirit and the first half was very even. Seconds before the half time whistle, a lapse in concentration lead to Fakenham taking a 1-0 lead. With a depleted squad and a few injuries it was always going to be an uphill struggle from there. City battled gamely but in truth Fakenham were too strong.

On 60 minutes Fakenham extended their lead and with 11 minutes to go they grabbed a third. Particular praise should go to Sherrie Tweed and Eunice Alexander who threw 110% into their defensive duties. Kate Bunch was also outstanding in goal. Lisa Hurley made her debut for city in central midfield and a special mention should also go to Martha Burrough who played a lone striker role and did not stop running.

A disappointing final score but Fakenham were worthy winners. They will be the standard by which we ought measure ourselves. Premiere division watch out.

Comberton U-10’s 2 Cambridge City U-10’s 13 posted by Claire Tyrrell

Saturday 4th December 2004

This was another impressive performance for the City U-10’s girls, with all the girls contributing in a convincing win. Lola Boulter was outstanding with eight goals, showing both good vision and excellent finishing. She was ably supported by Lauren Rouse (2), Lydia Sapsford (1), Mia Wayne (1) and Amber Martin with her first goal for the club. Although not getting on the score sheet, Suzi Cullum and Jasmine Gent both played well.
Comberton kept going right to the end and scored two goals, which they fully deserved.
