City began their league campaign in the best possible fashion bagging three points at Weymouth after coming from behind to do so.

City’s hero was Neil Midgley who, after coming on for Dubi Ogbonna who limped out of the action on the hour, not only banged in the equalising goal, but also made a telling contribution with his general play.

City made a flying start and very nearly found the back of the net with less than twenty seconds on the clock. Debut making Dubi Ogbonna negotiated an number of challenges before crossing to the far post where Joey Abbs could only watch as his shot crashed off the angle of post and crossbar.

Ogbonna and Abbs combined again soon after, this time Abbs crossed to Ogbonna, but the result was a little less dangerous for Weymouth as the striker miskicked, much to the relief of Nick Jordan in the home goal.

City continued to look the most likely to score in the early exchanges. Craig Hammond should have put City ahead when he was put clean through by Robbie Nightingale’s defence splitting pass. However, Jordan was equal to Hammond’s effort as the striker attempted to lift the ball over him.

Having survived City’s early onslaught, Weymouth steadied themselves and began to get a foothold in the game and they punished City’s profligacy in front of goal by taking the lead on 23 minutes. Last season’s top scorer, Warren Byerley stole in ahead of Dave Theobald to meet Ollie Tribes centre and place a powerful header past Zac Barrett.

Two minutes later and things could have got a whole lot worse for City, however they had Theobald to thank as he produced a perfectly timed challenge on Matt Groves to prevent a second goal of the afternoon for the Terras.

City hit back and almost forced an equaliser in the final moments of the half, but Theobalds‘s header flew wide.

The second half in much the same vein as they had the first with City on the front foot. They looked to have been dealt a blow however when Ogbonna limped out of the action on the hour following a heavy challenge from behind. Midgley came on to replace him and turned the game. Picking up Nightingale’s forward pass, he saw off the challenge of Scott Dixon before firing in a low centre that somehow found it’s way into the net. Most likely off Terras defender, Ben Gerring.

The winning goal arrived in the 77th minute when last season’s golden boot winner, Hammond, snapped up the easiest of chances. Nightingale’s searching ball found Luke Robins at the far post and he nodded across goal for the unmarked Hammond to provide the finishing touch.

The Terras rallied and provided a nervous last few minutes for the visitors and City had ‘keeper Barrett to thank for maintaining their lead with a couple of good saves from Richard Marshallsay and Stephen Reed.
