Two goals in three minutes was enough to send City to defeat in this clash with high flying Chippenham Town, the visitors never finding the form that had seen them take six points from their last two games in this match that never rose above the mediocre.

In a low key opening, neither side managed much to send the pulses racing. Former Clevedon man Mark Badman guided a shot into the arms of Martin Davies following a flick-on from Adie Mings, and a low shot on the run from Martin Paul forced Davies to make a good one handed stop at the foot of his post.

At the other end, City were huffing and puffing, unable to make much impression on a well organised home defence. Colin Vowden did manage to get on the end of a Niven free-kick but could only head wide of the goal.

Soon after, a misunderstanding saw Robbie Simpson mistakenly withdrawn from the action. What bearing he would have had on the game is impossible to say but City's attacking options were weakened as a result. Two minutes later, City were forced to make a further change as they prepared to defend a corner. Steve Holden was replaced by Tim Wooding and looks like he will miss a large part of what remains of the season with a groin strain.

The old addage, "don't make a change when about to defend a corner" sprang to mind as Chippenham added to City's woes by taking the lead. The initial cross was repelled but when the ball was returned into the area, Mings reacted to flick a header from 12 yards beyond Davies and into the far corner.

Three minutes later and the lead was doubled. This time it came by way of a long throw. Mings was again involved, flicking on at the near post to find Paul. While City's defenders did a great impression of a rabbit caught in a cars headlights, Paul calmly controlled and rolled the ball to an unmarked Charlie Griffin, who netted with ease.

In open play City never looked like making any inroads into the home sides lead, but set plays did offer a glimpse of some reward. One such situation saw Rob Nightingale curl an inviting ball into the six yard area, Kevin Wilkin was first to it but Colin Towler got in enough of a challenge to force the striker to fire over the bar from six yards.

Three minutes later from an almost identical position City again nearly prospered. This time Nightingale floated the ball to the back post. Chippenham keeper, James Bittner was tempted off his line into no mans land and was probably relieved to see Vowden's thumping header land on the roof of the net.

City improved marginally in the second half and at least managed to exert some pressure on their hosts goal but without forcing Bittner into a serious save.

In the opening minute, Danny Bloomfield went on a surging run that took him past three defenders before he was eventually stopped by Simon Charity at the expense of City's first corner of the game. From the resulting place kick the ball eventually found it's way to the far side of the area where Jack Wignall hit a carefully aimed half volley straight into Bittner's arms.

With City pressing hard without much reward, Chippenham were always a threat on the break. Paul went close with a dipping 35 yard volley that dropped only a couple of feet wide before Wilkin responded with a shot on the turn two minutes later that was comfortably held by the 'keeper.

The game continued to flow from one end to the other and just after the hour the two sides traded good opportunities to score. In the 65th minute, Bittner had to be on his toes to get down at the near post to block Bloomfield's close range effort following Matt Clements low cross.

Two minutes later and Badman should have done much better when he turned Vowden on the edge of the area, but as he burst through on goal he only managed to poke the ball over Davies' bar.

City continued to look for a foothold in the match but without much luck. Niven was unfortunate to see a fierce drive deflect wide for a corner and ten minutes later Nightingale got on the end of Clements deep cross only to head tamely over the bar when well placed.

A shot from Chippenham's Ian Herring from just outside the area that was comfortably saved by Davies was the final action of a disappointing afternoons work for City, but six from the last nine points on offer is a good return, and City will be looking to make that nine from twelve after this Tuesday's game with Welling United, a game that could see two new faces in the City line-up.

Post match reaction

Chippenham are now second in the League. I think we have to be realistic as regards where we are. The fact is, only two defensive errors cost us taking anything from the game. So, in that sense, it was disappointing that we gave those two goals away........more
